Call for contributors

Therapist in the Loop is developing a practical guide on safer use of AI in mental health and we're in the final stretch of building it with a small number of contributors and reviewers who have relevant professional expertise in law, mental health, or design.

AI Position Statement

At Therapist in the Loop, professional responsibility is the starting point for how we think about AI in mental health, and we believe that responsible practice can also be curious, innovative, and future-ready. We believe that AI tools in mental health should be considered only in ways that align with clinicians' professional obligations, including ethical codes, regulatory guidance, privacy duties, local laws, and standards of care. We abide by common principles shared by many professional codes across North America and Europe: protecting the public, preserving confidentiality, obtaining informed consent, practicing within one's competence, maintaining accountability, and prioritizing client welfare.

The name Therapist in the Loop reflects our interest in human-in-the-loop approaches to mental health technology: systems designed to support, rather than replace, professional judgment. We are interested in how AI might augment clinical work, and in how clinicians can help shape the safeguards and boundaries around its use.

We signed the Declaration for Responsible AI because its emphasis on safety, accountability, transparency, and human judgment aligns with how we believe AI should be evaluated in mental health contexts.
